Get Lit with Lit Review: Mayumi And The Sea of Happiness by Jennifer Tseng
Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness by Jennifer Tseng
Book Review by Talia Luening
As an Islander (born & raised on Martha’s Vineyard) there are very few books I have read that take place here, that I feel do my home justice. This book is one of those rare books that does just that; it captures the unique beauty & idiosyncrasies of the island & its inhabitants. And it does so while staying true to the reality of the isolation that is often felt here along with the intricate and sometimes “secret lives” of those who live here.
Tseng’s writing is exquisite and this story is at once a passionate and touching love story, (one that also happens to be forbidden) about finding oneself, a contemplation of life, love, the passage of time and the many things that bring us joy and pain.
This book felt like a gift to read and once I picked it up I could not put it down. This is a must-read for anyone who has loved and lived to tell about it.
****½ Stars for this beautiful book about two of the the things that matter most to me in the world: Love and The Vineyard.
